Originally
built in 1870 as a market hall for the busy town of Dolgellau with
the upper floors used as assembly rooms. Ideally located in the town
centre at Eldon Square renowned for its fairs and festivals over
the centuries.
In the 1920s and 1930s the hall became a venue for
films and plays. The building was called ‘Neuadd Idris’ for
the first time when the National Eisteddfod visited Dolgellau
in 1949. During the 50s and 60s folk dancing was very popular
and Neuadd Idris became a centre for this activity.
