07/03/2007 Valuable gift for Siamas

One of Wales’ foremost experts on folk music in Wales, Roy Saer, has donated his personal collection of specialist folk magazines to Ty Siamas, the National Centre for Folk Music which will open in Dolgellau in May, to start a specialist archive on the subject at the centre.

Roy Saer is noted as an expert in his field having been working at the traditions and dialects department in the Museum of Welsh Life, Sain Ffagan between 1963 and 1995. He started there as a research assistant travelling the length and breadth of Wales making invaluable recordings of old traditions and customs, before becoming head of the cultural life department. Both Caneuon Llofft Stabl (Stable Loft Songs) on sound, and Hanes y Delyn Yng Nghymru (the History of the Harp in Wales) in pictures were published during his time there. Today he is retired and chair of the Welsh Folk Song Society and chair of the Folk Songs sub-committee for the Cardiff National Eisteddfod, 2008.

Roy has donated his collection of Swaff news; Taplas, the voice of Folkin Wales and the borders which was Swaff’s successor; Dawns; Llafar Gwlad; Allwedd y Tannau; and many more. Some date back to 1948, and all are invaluable in our understanding of folk music in Wales in the second half of the 20th Century.

Mabon ap Gwynfor, Manager of Ty Siamas said:

“Roy Saer’s knowledge of our folk traditions is second to none, and he is recognised as an expert in his field. This is indeed a generous donation to Ty Siamas, and we hope to be able to build a valuable archive for our folk traditions in Wales. We are very grateful.”

Ty Siamas will open at the end of May. The project is funded by European Objective 1 money; Gwynedd County Council; the Welsh Assembly Government; and CAE Snowdonia National Park.

Ty Siamas is the National Centre for Folk Music.

Ty Siamas will have an interactive exhibition, auditorium for live gigs, and a café/bar.

Ty Siamas is situated at the Old Neuadd Idris, Dolgellau.

Ty Siamas will be open to the public at the end of May, 2007.

The official opening will be held between the 14th and 17th of June.

Ty Siamas is named after the harpist from Llanfachreth, Elis Sion Siamas, who was Queen Anne’s harpist at the beginning of the 18th Century, and is said to have introduce the triple harp to Wales.
