06/03/2008 Dolgellau Jazz Weekend

Jazz might be associated with New Orleans, or even Brecon, but for this week only it will have a new home in Dolgellau.

Ty Siamas the National Centre for Traditional Music and the Dolgellau Music Club are cooperating to bring the best Jazz from Wales and the world to north west Wales.

On Thursday evening, 13 March, Ty Siamas, Dolgellau, will host an evening with the Jazz fusion band Burum and the acclaimed triple harpist Llio Rhydderch.

It is an unique opportunity to hear two musical worlds combining creatively in an evening of traditional Welsh music and modern jazz.

Burum combine traditional Welsh melodies with modern jazz, while Llio Rhydderch is recognized as the foremost exponent of the Welsh Triple Harp today.

Burum are on a tour of Wales performing their innovative interpretations of Welsh traditional melodies laced with modern jazz improvisations - the band includes some of the brightest young stars of the Welsh jazz scene, as well as the unique sound of the Welsh bag/hornpipe.

Burum will also be sharing the stage and performing with the eminent triple harpist Llio Rhydderch. Llio is steeped in the tradition of the Welsh triple harp yet plays with a captivating and contemporary edge that places her firmly in the 21st century. An evening of creative, captivating music.

Then on Friday evening, 14th, the Dolgellau Music Club will host the renowned Michael Garrick Jazz Quartet at Coleg Meirion Dwyfor.

Michael Garrick and his fellow musicians have had long experience in introducing jazz and its pleasures to audiences (such as those of music clubs) less familiar with the idiom; by the same token, they have won acclaim for their ‘missionary’ work in schools and colleges. Humour, vivacity and sheer virtuosic skill are the keys to their success. A Guardian review last year of the Quartet's new CD 'Inspirations', wrote - "the world needs reminding that a UK jazz groundbreaker is still at work."

Finally on Saturday morning the Dolgellau Music Club is arranging a Jazz Workshop at Ty Siamas, Dolgellau from 10am to 12pm on Saturday 15th March - admission free!

The workshop will be led by members of the Michael Garrick Jazz Quartet, namely Michael Garrick (piano), Martin Hathaway (saxophone), Paul Moylan (double bass/ukelele) and Alan Jackson (drums).

Tickets for the Burum and Llio Rhydderch concert are available by phoning 01341 421800. Tickets and information for the Michael Garrick Quartet concert are available by e-mailing secretary@dolgellaumusicclub.org.uk. People interested in coming to the workshop, either because you play one of these instruments or because you just want to learn more about how jazz is put together, should contact 01341 450224, or Ty Siamas on 01341 421800.
