Fiddles, harps and pennywhistles

Would you like to take part in a day of Welsh traditional music? Ty Siamas (National Centre for Welsh Folk Music) and Clera (Society for the Traditional Instruments of Wales) are joining forces in Dolgellau on November 22nd for a morning of workshops and an afternoon with ‘Y Glerorfa’ – the celebrated Welsh Folk Orchestra.

Clera has been working with some of the primary schools in the Dolgellau area, so there will be a pennywhistle workshop especially ai med at children involved in the project, with a free whistle to take home for each child attending the class! In addition there will be workshops for harp and fiddle (for those with at least one year of playing experience), and a mixed workshop for all instruments. So whether you play e.g. guitar, concertina, flute, cello or bagpipes; if you fancy learning some traditional Welsh tunes and playing as part of an informal group, come along to Ty Siamas in Dolgellau on Saturday 22nd November at 9.30 a.m. - no need to register beforehand.

Y Glerorfa will be rehearsing during the afternoon at Ysgol y Gader, and from 2-2.30 p.m. there will be an opportunity to play some of the tunes learnt at the morning workshops with the 55-strong group of fiddles, harps, flutes and pipes, which has had such a success this year at Sesiwn Fawr, the Lorient Interceltic Festival in Brittany and St Asaph Festival. There will then be a full Folk Orchestra rehearsal. Workshop participants and parents are welcome to stay and listen to the rehearsal if they so wish.

This project is supported by the Arts Council of Wales and the Friends of Gwynedd Youth Music.
